But, although the distance fluctuates during the month, we will get a good stargazing opportunity throughout the whole of May. ![]() This makes Jupiter much easier to spot in our night skies and can be clearly seen with the naked eye (on a cloudless night, of course).Īt peak opposition, Jupiter will sit within 409 million miles of Earth, five million miles closer than last year. This is because of an annual movement Jupiter makes called 'opposition', when the big, red planet is positioned so that Earth is directly between it and the sun. Throughout the month of May, the planet Jupiter will be closer to Earth than it has been for almost two years.
